How to create a cPanel full backup?

cPanel provides a wizard for generating a full backup, which includes all websites, files, databases, emails, and FTP accounts.

Note:

  • Make sure you have enough free disk space in your account.

Usually, creating backups requires up to 200% of the used space. This space is needed for temporary files during backup generation and for storing the backup file.

If you have 10 GB of space, and 2 GB has been used, you have 8 GB free. That's more than enough (more than 200% of your used space) to generate and store the backup.

  • Do not generate more than one backup at a time, as it might delay the process or cause it to be aborted.

  • The backup will be stored in the home directory. You can access, download, or delete it using FTP or cPanel > File Manager.

  • After the backup is generated, download it on your end and delete the backup from your hosting account to free up disk space.

Generate a Full Backup

  • Navigate to cPanel > Backup > Download a Full Account Backup.

Or, cPanel > Backup Wizard > Back Up > Full Backup.

  • Select "Home Directory" as the Backup Destination.

  • Enter your email address to get notified upon backup completion.

Or, select  [*] Do not send email notification of backup completion.

  • Deselect [ ] Include integration links (may contain external account credentials).

  • Click "Generate Backup".

  • Done! Wait for the backup to be generated.

If you want to monitor the backup generation:

  • Click "Go Back".

Or, go to cPanel > Backup > Download a Full Account Backup.
Or, go to cPanel > Backup Wizard > Back Up > Full Backup.

  • If the backup is still being generated, it will be marked "inprogress":

    backup-6.22.2025_08-23-47_username.tar.gz (Sun Jun 22 08:23:47 2025) [inprogress]

Once the backup is complete, you will see a "tick mark" preceding the file name.

After backup generation is complete, you will be notified at the email address you provided.
